Holly from the Bongs

by Alan Garner

The nativity play ‘Holly from the Bongs’ was written by Blackden author Alan Garner in 1965, and was performed by Goostrey primary schoolchildren in the now-demolished stables of the Crown Inn, Goostrey in December 1965. There followed a book of the same name which chronicled the build-up and performance of the play in words and photographs.

Many of the photographs taken by professional photographer Roger Hill, Cheniston Gardens Studios, remained unpublished until an exhibition at The Crown Inn, Goostrey on 29th November 2025 to commemorate the 60th anniverary of the play. The following ‘video’ files and photographs were compiled for the event by one of Goostrey Parish Archive’s historians, Stewart Smallwood.

Gathering holly from the Bongs

"The Bongs" is a popular ancient deciduous woodland in Goostrey, named after a medieval Cheshire dialect term for a wooded area by a riverbank. The river itself is called “Crow Brook” but also appears on some maps as “Red Lion Brook” as it passes close to the Red Lion pub in nearby Lower Withington
